- Laverne Shantz Good was born April 14th, 1918 on the family farm south of the Baden Sand Hills, to Abraham and Barbara (Shantz) Good. Being the youngest of 8 children, Laverne had many role models to look up to. After Grade 8, Laverne worked for a number of families, including his brother Aaron, as a farm labourer. During World War II, Laverne served as a Conscientious Objector, building roads in Northern Ontario. He attended Ontario Mennonite Bible School and Institute in Kitchener. During his time in school, Laverne developed a love for poetry, and particularly enjoyed writing poetry for special occasions. While working for Horace and Mary Cressman and attending Cressman Mennonite Church (now Breslau Mennonite) he met Margaret Dettweiler. A poem was scripted announcing their engagement prior to their wedding on September 13th, 1956. Laverne and Margaret farmed north of Breslau for 40 years. During this time, Laverne also worked for the Waterloo County Co-op in Bridgeport and Baden, and Harold Snider and Conestoga Meat Packers in Breslau. Laverne and Margaret were active in the life of Breslau Mennonite Church. In June 2000, Laverne moved from the farm into an apartment at Fairview Mennonite Home, to be closer to Margaret. During his 3 years at Fairview, Laverne actively participated in the games room and many of the activities around the home. He enjoyed the many friendships and support of the Fairview community. On June 25th, 2003, Laverne answered the Lord's invitation, "Come to me... and I will give you rest." (Mt. 11:28) and went home to eternal rest.
